From Lucy for My World Tuesday

This ship seems, to me, to be a very big ship!

This photo was taken on 2nd August 2009, looking across Portland Harbour, in Dorset.

Portland Harbour will be the base for the sailing events of the 2012 Olympics.

It´s certainly big and I wonder if they could have put a couple more containers on it. I think not.

Hello Chrome 3d.

I don't know how far away the ship was when I took the photo - but I'd guess two or two-and-a-half miles. I can't imagine how big it must be when one gets closer!

A lovely day! Lets hope we have more like this one!

Thanks for showing! It looks like a ferry!

I love big container ships--saw one the other month at a state park in Monroe, and they're often on the Detroit River downtown.

Hello Reader Wil - I'm not sure what kind of ferry you mean - but I think this vessel would probably be able to transport several.

It's the way they are able to balance the containers which gets me - that and that the whole thing doesn't sink!

Hello Monica - I would expect to hate container ships but they fascinate me too. Sometimes, they are even cheerful.

This one must have been exceptionally large. (At least, for round here.) My camera was set to its most distant zoom - the harbour wall is about two miles away and you may have noticed that that is big enough to take a building on top of it.

I'm interested that you see container ships on the Detroit river. That makes sense given the industrial nature of the area but it still came as a surprise to me. I'll have to do some Google images-ing.

Wow, it sure dwarfs the sailboats. Nice capture.

Nothing like a good container ship. I missed seeing them pass by on the horizon (I'm near shoreham port here) when I was in China.
Did remind me of a rather gruesome episode of CSI New York and the second series of the Wire too.
(mmm...Stringer Bell! :) )

Hello Gaelyn. I don't know how big this container ship is when compared with others of its kind - but from where I was standing, it looked as if it should dwarf just about everything - not just sailing boats!

Hello J.

It's at moments like this that I'm missing out on ways of seeing because I have no television!

I would think in the parts of China which trade by sea, the container ships would be amongst the biggest in the world. Would that be right?

Cool shot. Looks like a huge cliff sailing along.

A beautiful picture of sailing boats!!

Hello, Lady Fi.

Yes, just like a cliff. Imagine being up close to it! Imagine climbing it!

3c August 13, 2009 at 8:24 PM

Hello Marju. There are lots of sailing boats because there is a sailing club nearby.
