From Lucy - COW, ROPE, SPRING, SOCKS - Black and White for MONOCHROME WEEKLY

The dark room used to be my favourite place. But it's a long time since I was there. These are the first photos I've taken in black and white with my new digital camera. (I took some with a phone before!) I'm not used to it yet - so I'd like criticism. PLEASE be critical.

The top shot is very pleasing.

Thank you for visiting The Third Column and commenting on the Cow, the Rope and the Socks. I'm especially glad that people liked the rope photo because, when I look at it logically, it's a bit murky - but, when I shut my eyes, I can still see it - which is why I chose that one instead of a crisper, more contrasted version.

I'm looking forward to more of your comments.

NEWS FROM WESTBURY

New World War I Exhibition at the Visitor / Heritage Centre at Westbury (in Wiltshire)

The Westbury Visitor Centre opened a new exhibition on Saturday 1st August which features local material on the First World War. It was opened, in full WW1 uniform, by local expert Steve Williams. With materials from the villages, post cards and other ephemera from local collector Derek Whale, models and kits from the Gas Cupboard and archive material from the Centre itself.

It also has pictures and details of local war memorials. Though planned for many months, the exhibition has been given even more relevance by the recent death of several WW1 veterans like Harry Patch. It seems appropriate that we should remember their bravery and sacrifice whilst local soldiers are fighting in Afghanistan and elsewhere. The exhibition will run until October and is free to view.

What's over the top? This is what Hermes and Debbie asked when I showed this photo on 'Pictures Just Pictures'.

. . . This is what you see when you come over the brow on this stretch of path.

Portland Harbour - where the sailing events for the 2012 Olympics will be taking place - and Portland in the distance.

Not that I recommend you take your eye off the path, or you'll be tumbling down here.

Over and over, people make new paths as the old ones crumble away;

higher, then higher . . .

So that's what I do now - take the higher path, in case that next edge is ready to tip.

There are lots of little coves below; each one protected from the waves by boulders. They loop in and out like a lace edging.

Gorse burns - and there's a lot of gorse round here. This fire was recent; the smell of burning so strong it may still have been smoldering. On the way back, I met women bringing buckets of water to put out a smaller fire before it spread.

Picture Just Pictures readers may recognise the remains of the World War Two Gun emplacement on the beach. (The round shape.) 'Now The War is Over ' and 'Fallen Wall'.

This is another photo from Pictures Just Pictures, 'Rusted Rails Near Ferrybridge'. This is where the path I was on meets with the route of the old line to Portland. When I first walked here, the tracks had been lifted but there was nothing but broken stone under foot. It has a tarmac surface now and lots of people walk or cycle in and out of town along it. Great! Except I feel a bit churlish. It was nice to be here when hardly anyone else was!

This is the Causeway to Portland. I'll show you what it's like to walk along there sometime . . . coastal plants and all!
